Gypsum & GRG Ceiling Medallions
Decorative ceiling centres for chandeliers, pendant lights and ceiling fans. Supplied unpainted with a central cable aperture, ready to fix and finish.
A ceiling medallion sits at the point where a light fitting meets the ceiling. Functionally it covers the cable entry; visually it gives the fixture a base to sit on, so a pendant or chandelier reads as part of the room rather than an addition to it.
We produce medallions in solid gypsum plaster and in GRG — glass fibre reinforced gypsum. Both take paint identically. The difference is weight and how large a section can be cast safely: a 1200 mm solid plaster medallion is a two-person lift overhead, while the GRG equivalent is a one-person job.
Gypsum Ceiling Medallions
Solid plaster cast in fibreglass moulds, giving deep relief with crisp edges. This is the traditional construction and still the reference point for heritage and high-end interiors: the density gives the piece a solidity that lighter materials cannot quite match.
| Material | Gypsum plaster, high density |
|---|---|
| Diameters | 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 1000, 1200 mm |
| Thickness | 25 mm – 45 mm depending on diameter |
| Centre aperture | Standard 60 mm, sized to your fitting on request |
| Finish | Unpainted white, ready for priming and topcoat |
| Designs | Plain cove, fluted, acanthus, scroll and geometric patterns |
GRG Ceiling Medallions
GRG is gypsum reinforced with glass fibre, cast from the same patterns as the solid range. The fibre carries tensile load that plain plaster cannot, which is why large-diameter GRG medallions can be cast much thinner and lighter than the solid equivalent — and why they resist the hairline cracking that heavy plaster can develop as a building moves.
| Material | Glass fibre reinforced gypsum (GRG) |
|---|---|
| Diameters | 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 1000, 1200 mm |
| Weight | Substantially lighter than the equivalent solid plaster medallion |
| Centre aperture | Standard 60 mm, sized to your fitting on request |
| Finish | Unpainted white, ready for priming and topcoat |
| Advantages | Lighter overhead, resists hairline cracking, lower shipping weight |
Choosing between them
| Specify solid gypsum when | Heritage or premium interiors; maximum relief depth is wanted; the ceiling can take the weight |
|---|---|
| Specify GRG when | Large diameters that have to be lifted overhead; shipping weight matters; high volume residential or hotel projects |
Ordering
Tell us the diameter, the design, and the cable aperture your light fitting needs. If you are matching an existing pattern, send a photo or drawing and we will confirm whether it is a stock design or requires a new mould. Standard designs ship from stock.
